My mom and I had lunch here on a Thursday in May, and I was surprised at two things: how quiet it was, and how reasonable the prices were! We both had the traditional pot pie which comes with a small walnut room salad. I had a french 75 cocktail to celebrate finally getting to eat at the famous Walnut Rooom, and mom had a mango Agua Fresca, which was delicious and part of the Cinco de mayo specials. We were both happy with our meals, the service was great and the ambiance was classic! I recommend checking it out, and I'll definitely be back!

I went to the walnut room in November when they had their famous Christmas decorations up. It was a cute vibe and fun to see the big Christmas tree. The food was decent, I got a burger. It seemed a bit outdated and not the best ambiance.

Overall experience was just ok.

2/5 by 👻 @Kristen S. on 03/25/2024

It's a Chicago staple known for its Christmas decor and that's really what people go for. I've been around Christmas and it doesn't disappoint. The restaurant is gorgeous no matter what time of year you go. However, I can say less about the food. We got the pot pie, which is what they say is their staple dish and it was tasty but very small for the price. The service was unbelievably slow. It took forever to get our drinks and by the time they got to us, they were warm. We debated on a second round because of how long we waited. Regrettably, we did get a second round but by the time those arrived, we were already done with our meal and were ready for the bill. I would recommend this place for the Christmas experience only but wouldn't advise those to come with high expectations. Be sure to make a reservation if you do because they get booked.

But the filet steak was the worse I've eaten ever! Walnut Room chef put some kind of gravy mushroom over steak?? A good filet steak does not need drenched in anything. Plus it was a fatty steak? It may have not even been a filet. Mentioned to our waiter and he said he would say something to kitchen. Pretty disappointing!

What can you say about the Walnut Room around the holidays?

What can you say about the Walnut Room around the holidays? The ambience is spectacular. The food is phenomenal. And the service was beyond impeccable. Sad and Tired Christmas Experience

2/5 by 👻 @michael w on 12/12/2023

My daughter and I visited for the Christmas festivities. It was strange that it was very difficult to get a table yet the space was less than half filled when we arrived for our reservation time. Also there was just the 2 of us and we were seated at a 6 person table. Food was ok and as expected. It felt as though the event lacked any sort of lead ship and organization. Perhaps this is how it plays out each year. I was not the event that we expected. It was not even close to other special Christmas events that we have visited with our daughter over the years. Perhaps management should visit other cities like New York and toronto to witness other family Christmas events and learn. The staff seemed to have very little Christmas spirit and performed their tasks with very little interest in making the experience fun for everyone. The experience was a little sad.

Pass

1/5 by 👻 @Jill S on 12/11/2023

I was looking forward to coming back as it’s been a while since I dined here for the holiday, but if I could give zero stars I would as the dining experience was terrible. We had to ask twice for an additional chair as the table they sat us at didn’t hold the entire party that we reserved for. We were sat in the far back left of the seating area next to the kitchen. What’s unfortunate about being seated in the back left of the seating area is that they leave all the giant bussing bins along side the wall in plain sight so the only view we had was stacked up dishes that smelled like old ketchup and were spilling over with food. The only thing we could hear was the waitstaff and bussers dropping dishes into the bins every few seconds—it was loud and extremely unpleasant. The tables were so close together in this area that a single person could hardly get through an aisle, let alone a waiter with food and definitely not someone with limited mobility or in a wheelchair. There were 3 open tables further away from the kitchen and bussing bins that would fit our party. We asked the hostess if we could move tables so we could get some reprieve from the old food smell and the loud slamming of dishes every few seconds. The hostess said the kitchen was closed but said she’d ask the waiter. After 5 minutes and still no one taking our order, the waiter came to our table and we asked them directly. The waiter didn’t even have a chance to respond because the manager who was standing by the bussing bins heard us ask the question and shouted, “No! Sorry! But no! No one can move to a different table!”. The aggressiveness of the response left us in shock and was embarrassing —we should have just left, but we just froze. The group hardly talked after that. It ruined the whole night. After 30 minutes, we were finally able to get a food order in (they were out of pot pie and salmon). They gave us wet cloth napkins and one of our drinks came in a dirty glass that had lip marks, was sticky, and had finger prints all over it. We didn’t ask for a new napkin or drink because we didn’t want to cause any other reason to get shouted at. Like suckers we just put up with it and paid for an undrinkable drink. Aside from the whole shouting incident, the floors were covered in food and trash. I don’t think they sweep up the dining area throughout the day. I bet the kitchen looks the same. You’ll have a better experience holiday experience at a Cracker Barrel. I will never come back again and wish we could get our money back.

Best Chicken Pot Pie In The World!

5/5 by 👻 @Ladye A on 12/01/2023

This was our first stop when we got to Chicago. The decorations were beautiful. I had read where they had the best Chicken Pot Pie in the world. Well, they did not lie, it was wonderful. Walnut Room Salad was also very good. We finished the meal with a huge slice of Carrot Cake and coffee. The scenery was beautiful and the meal was too. Make sure to get your reservations on Open Table so you do not make the trip and be disappointed.

The food was good, the service was very bad and very slow. Waited for the bill over 30 minutes. But the worse thing is asking the manager by the tree to take our photo, me my friend and 2 little boys he replied absolutely not , then he loudly asking us if we have reservation!!!!!!! I told him we just finished eating here. If he works for me I will definitely train him first before he works in public , such a bad image to your company and restaurant!!! The decor at the Walnut Room is stunning! However, the queue to get in (despite having a reservation) was huge!! Once in the staff were pleasant enough. I felt the full experience was very rushed. Christmas Time at the Walnut Room

5/5 by 👻 @Paul A on 11/05/2023

The Christmas time here will be a yearly treat; but I recommend you start looking for reservations in September as it was IMPOSSIBLE to get any reservation by the tree in November-December. I was LUCKY to get the first day at 630pm! Overall, it was a fun experience (more or less); the table we had was definitely put in to have an extra table - it was tight and way to close to the table of 5 next to us. Food was great ($$-$$$ side -- but that's to be expected); Changing of the colors of the room: I preferred the orange as it was "natural" and easy to take pics of the food and tree in its natural light; it affected my sight a little; also I think prices are about $2 too much ;) Overall, though I would recoomend this is a Christmas treat!

5/5 by 👻 @Tyga M. on 03/26/2023

I wasn't sure what to make of this place at first - it's upscale, but inside of a department store. There's limited seating due to short staff in the evening, but the service is efficient and friendly. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised. Our cocktails were sneakily strong, and my meatloaf was so, so good. It screamed traditional, but the mix of pine nuts and spinach within added a fresh, light flavor to it. The braised beef dish also had a great flavor and was tender, but didn't "fall off the bone". The buttery garlic bread with asiago cheese was hit at the table, but all this looked to be was Hawaiian bread buttered in garlic and topped with the cheese - not a bad thing, but easy to replicate at home. Nonetheless, I liked it here.

Refined Dining...

4/5 by 👻 @14BUN on 02/21/2023

I wouldn't go so far as to say the Walnut Room is fine dining, but it is refined; nice decor with a properly laid table setting, not a knife and fork wrapped in a paper napkin. Tablecloths would be a nice touch, but no one seems to do that anymore. The menu provides appropriate variety and thankfully, descriptions are not vague. Great full table service; staff are friendly, although personal presentation could do with a bit of work. It's a lovely place to dine for a special occasion/celebration.

My first time going to the Walnut Room in many years.

4/5 by 👻 @Tom G. on 01/28/2023

We were greeted by a very nice hostess and were seated near the large windows overlooking State St. I asked the hostess if she could lower the volume of the music. She said that she would look into it. About 15 minutes later the hostess was seating another couple and I asked her if they would lower the volume again, she the volume has to be lower on the third floor, not on the same floor we were on. I contacted Macy's for a follow-up.We both ordered their famous Chicken Pot Pie. They were delicious with a perfectly cooked top crust and a good mix of vegetables, and chunks of chicken, no wonder it's their most famous dish. I can't say as much for the Caesar Salad it was anemic with hardly any dressing on it. I didn't even finish half of it. On the other hand, there was a nice "citrusy" tossed salad that came with the Chicken Pot Pie, it was ten times better than the Caesar Salad. We asked for the dessert menu but decided on a slice of Carrot Cake to go, my friend said it was the "best ever". We decided not to have coffee and dessert there for obvious reasons. The only reason I gave four stars is because of our waiter Jose' he was outstanding, very attentive and informative.

However, the Vegan option was awful, inedible. The Server still charged us despite the fact my daughter hated it and didn't eat it. In fact the Server didn't seem to care. The Christmas tree is gorgeous as are the rest of the decorations. The history, the beautiful setting, the decorations and festive nature almost made it worth it for a good, overpriced, chicken pot pie and inedible Vegan meal. Just expect to pay a lot for atmosphere and not much else.

The interior felt a bit like an amusement park which isn't

3/5 by 👻 @Amy D. on 01/06/2023

The interior felt a bit like an amusement park which isn't necessarily bad. Still, the ambience was not what I thought it would be. I had snagged a last minute reservation after Christmas so maybe it was different because of the seasonal crowd. My family each got different meals, but I couldn't help noticing how they seemed to use the same ingredients in every dish (green beans, nuts and gravy). The chicken pot pie was front in center on the menu so I figured I should try it! It was delicious and nicely seasoned. At the same time, it was plated as if someone might've just heated it up and placed a giant ritz cracker on top of it. My favorite part actually ended up being the salad that came with! It was sweet with a perfect amount of crunch, but definitely not for people who don't like sugary salads. Overall, I liked it. Still, I think the quality of the food could have lived up to the reputation a little more.I recommend trying it at least once (maybe without the seasonal crowd)!- AT

Got to finally try the Walnut Room it was so hard to get

3/5 by 👻 @Francine L. on 01/04/2023

Got to finally try the Walnut Room it was so hard to get reservations during the Christmas holiday season. I would check the website daily to see if they had reservations. It was fully booked all the days but good thing on one of the nights someone had canceled so I was able to snag a reservation. Ordered their famous pot pie which was very traditional but nothing special. It was lacking some flavor slightly. The little one got to make his snowman and it was kind of sad how small it was. Not worth it. Tried their chocolate dessert but it was such a hard crust that I wasn't able to eat it. I don't think it defrosted well enough. Overall I would say the Christmas tree inside the Walnut Room is nice but food or dessert isn't up there. But many people come here because of the tree and they do change it every year.

I missed the buffet, however...but we can thank COVID for taking that away!As we were walking to the back of the restaurant where they wanted to place us, I noticed empty tables that could accommodate 2 people at either a two-top or 4-top in the main room with the Christmas tree. Sorta put a bad taste in my mouth already.Noticed there was not enough wait staff, although Dominque was very friendly, she eventually disappeared and we had to have a table-cleaner to ask our server we needed refills on drinks. Service eventually improved (helped when we asked them to bring extra glasses of soda). One pet peeve..it was way too dark in the back. More light is needed! Not sure if we ruffled the feathers of our server, we recv'd glass mugs commemorating 115 years of the Walnut Room Christmas meals...not sure if they were giving them out free or not, but it helped smooth things over in the end.

If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to The Walnut Room Chicago at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the The Walnut Room Chicago page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.

Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.

* MaternalRecord73 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to MaternalRecord73 for any questions Peter may have as MaternalRecord73 user fills the bid.

3.) Finding the Reservation
* MaternalRecord73 now uses their connections at The Walnut Room Chicago to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If MaternalRecord73 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.

4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, MaternalRecord73 receives the $200 reward which is credited to MaternalRecord73's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at The Walnut Room Chicago!
