5/5 by 👻 @Momo Z. on 09/14/2025

Amazing good! This restaurant is so easy to book, and for a $160 omakase, the quality is pretty spot-on--what more could you ask for? I feel like only in a place like San Diego can you find this kind of value. It's even a Michelin one-star restaurant. As for the food, the only thing I really remember is how amazing the raw oyster was. If I had to point out a downside, the portions were a bit too small--I definitely didn't leave feeling full. This is arguably the best-tasting omakase in San Diego--leaning traditional, so flavor is the priority here. Master Tadokoro is highly experienced, and the sea urchin is absolutely incredible~Compared to this, Ota is more artistic and modern~ These two restaurants really stand out as the top two omakase spots in San Diego.

The best omakase experience I've ever had!!! My boyfriend

5/5 by 👻 @Alyssa N. on 08/19/2025

The best omakase experience I've ever had!!! My boyfriend was nice enough to take me here to celebrate. He got a 5pm reservation on a Saturday. Parking is tough since it's a small plaza but plenty of street parking. They have a sign saying it's reservation only, but some people were able to be seated since some people were no shows. We were seated at the bar. Very clean shop, great service (very attentive and kept refilling our drinks). We had the omakase experience and the owner was our chef. He was so lovely! Great description of each dish and comparisons. I can't even name all the fish we tried, it was all so good. I really liked the miso cod, sashimi platter, and halibut bites. The dessert was a coffee pudding that was sooo yummy. I got a plum wine and really loved it. It is a pricey meal, but if you're looking to splurge this is the spot to go!

I have been to a couple of omakases before and Sushi

5/5 by 👻 @Elodie T. on 08/17/2025

I have been to a couple of omakases before and Sushi Tadokoro did not disappoint! We sat at the bar where we could watch the preparations of the chefs and had a wonderful experience. The omakase experience was $165 in August 2025 and we were served: Appetizer: the appetizer plate consisted of a fresh oyster with ponzu sauce, a few tempura-fried peppers and a freshly made tofu block - I can't remember exactly what the chef had said about the tofu, but it was delicious and had more body and soybean taste than your regular grocery tofu. Fresh Sashimi: Delicious - I don't typically like shrimp but that preparation is my favorite that I've ever had. Please note though - the shrimp was so fresh that the head was, uh, still moving. Mine was moving just a little, but there was someone down the bar that had a really, uh, feisty one. You can request that they remove the shrimp head from the presentation. You're not eating the head, because they will fry it for you later (it was crunchy! Like a soft-shelled crab). Grilled Chillean Sea Bass: perfectly cooked, and paired with a pickled ginger. Nigiri Sushi: I could not describe how good each piece was - and I'm sure this changes day-to-day. At the end of the nigiri sushi round, we were asked if we wanted to re-order any of them again and we asked for unagi (not part of the menu, but we had seen them prepare them and they were delicious) and "the one with the white kelp on top". That one tasted so unique and so good. Words fail me! Clear Soup - after so much sushi and food, this soup was hot and felt so soothing getting into my stomach! It looks like only a little bit of soup in the bowl but was more than enough to satisfy. Dessert - their featured dessert was a coffee panna cotta, which neither of us felt like. We were also given the choice of alternative sorbets, and we chose the lychee sorbet. Delicious and light, and perfect to finish off the meal! My only disappointment is that there was no sake flight pairing, which I think would've have enhanced the experience. I asked for their recommendations and chose a carafe (and the carafe has a separate compartment for ice so that the sake doesn't get diluted). I did get to choose my own sake cup. :) My BIL got a lemon sour and enjoyed it. Overall, fantastic experience and would definitely recommend!

Been to many sushi restaurants but first time trying

4/5 by 👻 @Neth D. on 07/28/2025

Been to many sushi restaurants but first time trying omakase. Given that Sushi tadokoro is the OG San Diego Michelin star omakase restaurant it was the obvious choice. Few key details that might be a deal breaker for some if you're doing this for the "experience" and/or going on that special date. 1. Not all seating is at the bar. There's only about 10 seats at the bar where you see the chefs making the courses and get served by them as well. The rest of the seating are regular tables serviced by a server. 2. No interaction. If you sit at the bar the chefs will interact with you. They'll tell you fun facts, show you their daily catch, ask you questions. So if you sit at the table you'll miss that. If that's something you care about. The hokkaido uni is the best I've had. Creamy and delicious. I have had better tuna and toro but it was still solid. The price was $165 before tax and tip (08/2025). They are very busy and only had 2 servers so the wait between food was a little longer than we liked. Overall it was a great experience and the food was delicious but we were still hungry after haha

1/5 by 👻 @Gabriella A. on 07/05/2025

We spent nearly $400 for four people (including tip), and sadly, the experience was deeply underwhelming. This was my sixth Michelin-starred restaurant visit, and I can now understand why this establishment lost its star. The sushi was bland and lacked depth of flavor. Rolls were poorly constructed and loosely wrapped--something I wouldn't expect at this level. What was even more disappointing was the complete lack of engagement from the staff; no one asked how our meal was at any point. Of all the Michelin-starred restaurants I've dined at, this was by far the most disappointing. The price and hype simply aren't justified.

I finally made the splurge to visit my first michelin

3/5 by 👻 @Tiffany L. on 07/24/2024

I finally made the splurge to visit my first michelin starred restaurant to enjoy my first omakase experience! I had some pretty high expectations due to the many accolades bestowed upon this restaurant and though my experience was overall pretty good, it wasn't spectacular. There were a few small things that added up that detracted from what was one of the most expensive meals I've ever paid for. My friend and I arrived for our reservation right on the dot and had to wait a few minutes for our table to be cleared which wasn't a huge deal. There's no waiting area so we just stood outside of the restaurant, which is located in a small strip mall with pretty limited parking. The hostess was very nice, and set a good tone to the start of our meal. After being seated, our server came over within a few minutes to greet us and take our order. One thing that surprised me was the tableware; they only have medium quality disposable chopsticks and paper napkins. At a restaurant where people are easily spending $200 pp, I expected higher quality place settings. The food came out pretty quickly, with each dish being replaced with the next course less than 5 minutes after finishing the previous dish, until it didn't. Somehow at the tail end of the meal before our last 2 courses, our server forgot about us. We sat there for a good 15-20 minutes waiting for our food while we watched 2-3 tables around us who had been seated after us and were 1-2 courses behind us catch up, surpass, and finish the experience while we waited. Eventually my friend brought it to the servers attention and she apologized and brought out our final courses quickly after that but considering how small the seating is I don't see how she could have served the tables to the left and right of us without noticing that our table was empty. It wasn't enough to negate the good parts of the meal, but again I expect more when paying for a premium experience. We just got a rushed apology, but I feel like she could have offered an extra bite/amuse bouche type thing that would have turned that interaction around instead of brushing it under the rug. Overall I enjoyed the courses that came out. The appetizer was comprised of 3 bites (oyster on the shell, homemade tofu, and fried mackerel). The tofu was really savory & flavorful and one of my favorite bites of the whole meal! Next we received our sashimi plate with 5 different types of fish (snapper, kanpachi, mackerel, scallops, ahi otoro). The otoro was absolutely divine, I've never had one with so much fat marbling to the point where it was 90% fat). Next came a slice of warm chilean sea bass in some kind of delicious soy-miso glaze with a fresh ginger root. Next we got a deep fried shrimp head & tail, and the serve explained we'd get to eat the body prepared in the nigiri round. This was better than expected, kind of like eating a shrimp chip, and would be tasty for those who appreciate soft shell crab (which I'm not a fan of). Following this came a plate of 4 pieces of nigiri (snapper, ahi, shrimp, and mackerel). Each bite was already dressed with sauce/wasabi and made for delicious, fresh bites. At this point in the meal, we started to get a bit concerned that we were still going to be hungry at the end of the meal because on the menu it said there was only soup & dessert left, but luckily we got a few additional plates for the "nigiri" course. Our next dish was a teacup full of sushi rice with roe and uni, which was very fresh, tasty, and seemed a bit more substantial than our previous bites. Then we got another dish which was seared/smoked ahi in a soy glaze with additional spicy seasoning on the side. The smoked flavor of this was really yummy! Then we received our final two pieces of nigiri (halibut & triggerfish I think?). Then we sat for a long time gazing longingly at the tables around us as they got their next courses and kept trying to make eye contact with the serves. Finally after a long pause, we got our fish soup which in all honesty I think I could have done without. It was more fishy than I was expecting and I found it a bit odd that it was served at the end of the meal instead of the beginning because it ended the meal on a heavy note. For dessert, we were offered ice cream or panna cotta, and we chose the latter. It was coffee flavored and really refreshing! At this point, we were thankfully quite satisfied, though my companion and I are petite women and I'd assume the same might not be said for men with larger appetites. As we were paying, we heard the two guys seated next to us planning to go to an ice cream shop afterwards so I guess that answered our question haha. While I had a good meal, Sushi Tadokoro didn't quite live up to my expectations nor do I necessarily think it's worth the price point. I'm glad I got to try it but I would go elsewhere for a high quality sushi experience.

There are currently two 1 Michelin star sushi restaurants in San Diego. I thought the other one, which I won't name in this review out of courtesy, was slightly better. In fact, both chefs have worked together in the past so some of the dishes were quite similar or the same. Overall though it is still quite a treat to try the Omakasa here and you will likely not be disappointed with your experience. Everything was very fresh and high-quality. Homemade desserts were a nice touch and underrated.

I'm rounding up, but really wish Yelp allowed half stars on individual reviews, as my 4.5 star experience here was right on the cusp of a full rating but not quite. Regardless of the unassuming entrance and interior, a Michelin star rightly carries with it high food-specific expectations, and for the most part Sushi Tadokoro hit the mark with its fantastically fresh omakase served by Takeaki Tadokoro himself. The entire course was premium quality and delectable, no question. However, some inconsistently sized cuts of fish left me slightly confused (not to mention jealous when other sushi bar patrons received greater portions)! :P

5/5 by 👻 @Eleni P. on 07/15/2024

I have so much to say about this place because I truly enjoyed my experience here. This was probably my first Michelin star and omakase experience, and I can say it was certainly worthwhile. The location is unexpected. I think it was next to a liquor store in an unassuming plaza, and the inside is very small and intimate. We were a group of four so we sat at a table, but definitely try to get bar seating if you can! There's so much food to go through, and I definitely wouldn't want to ruin the omakase experience by going through EVERYTHING, so I'll just say to open your tastebuds (you might get the chance to eat a fried shrimp head!). Food is delicious and rather filling, you're there for two hours and there are many sushi courses. Definitely tried things that I haven't tried before. My favorite bite of the night was either the Chilean sea bass with the pickled baby ginger, which was very sweet and not overpowering in ginger, or this piece of nigiri I had where the fish was melting in my mouth; it was so savory and delightful, I wish I had more bites. Service is wonderful. They go through and explain each dish in detail for you. They kept coming for refills on our green tea. Price is not too bad either, considering the quality of the food and service you get.

All the sushi was mediocre, the "neta" were very thin, and I wish they had more volume in thickness. Nothing is particularly noteworthy to me. The chef, who was busy taking care of other customers in the restaurant, mainly those at the tables, was primarily receiving orders for sushi rolls. I prefer to avoid sushi restaurants where the customers may not be familiar with authentic sushi. I don't plan to return.

Tried their counter omakase with the other chef other than tadokoro himself. My experience with him wasn't impressive at all. There was no engagement all the *sari* was really sloppy where rice literally fell apart as soon as he put down the nigiri pieces. The chef was too bus making stuff for * other * tables so the countertop seat having any sort of engagement was non existent. He barely gave us explanation on what we were having nor engaged on our food much. After dropping 500plua for dinner, walked out hungry either mediocre service. Great Omakase Experience

5/5 by 👻 @Pauline Steele on 05/11/2024

Sushi Tadokoro is located in Old Town and boasts 3 straights years of being awarded a Michelin Star from 2021-2023! We celebrated my husband’s birthday dinner here and we had a great Omakase experience. Parking: We got lucky that we found a spot within the very small parking lot. However, it seems that lots of people have to park on the street. When you check in for the reservation, the host will show a map of where you should park. Ambiance: The inside is very clean and bright. We sat the bar and there were tables that seated 2-4 people, though some tables can probably be pushed together to accommodate for a slightly larger party. Service: Our chef, Takahisa, was skilled, personable, and fun to talk to while dining. He really made our whole experience pleasurable! The servers were very quick and attentive, my water cup never reached the bottom! Food: The price for the Omakase is pretty reasonable. I forgot how many dishes were served but we were pretty full at the end. For the appetizer, you can choose between the Grilled Chilean Sea Bass or the Golden eye snapper head and we both opted for the Sea Bass— this is one of our favorite dishes actually. One of my other favorites was the Uni hand roll. At the end of the meal before dessert, they served a refreshing cup of soup. For dessert, they served my husband matcha ice cream with cupcake, and we also ordered the coffee pudding and Sesame ice cream— they were all tasty and not too sweet. For drinks, my husband couldn’t decide which Sake to order, so the server gave him 3 tasting samples of what she recommended. When he chose the one he liked, they had him choose from one of the unique cups lined up behind the chefs. Overall: We had a wonderful experience here and were so glad we were able to find a reservation 2 weeks in advance. Highly recommend this place for its great service, skilled chefs, and delicious food!

3/5 by 👻 @Sam S. on 03/20/2024

We've been going here for over a decade before all the hoopla. Sadly, our beloved Tadokoro has gone done hill--not in terms of quality but quantity. We tried it a few times to make sure it wasn't a fluke but nope, the number of nigiri pieces have gone down to 6 or 7 (compared to 10-12 pieces at other omakase locations for similar price point and quality). The sashimi has gotten slimmer and slimmer. The rest of the set menu items remain in place. This leaves us hungry and wanting to get something else after. After spending $400+ for two, you want to feel satisfied. With a lot of high quality omakase competition locally, this isn't our go to anymore. It feels like a tourist trap. On the upside, they haven't raised their prices much (seems to prefer to cut portion size), but I'd rather they just increase their price so I feel full. If you care about the Michelin star, by all means, it's a great quality meal. If you care about quality and value, do a little research and you'll find some other great local places.

Like a flower growing through the pavement, Sushi Tadokoro

5/5 by 👻 @Jacob R. on 03/01/2024

Like a flower growing through the pavement, Sushi Tadokoro in Old Town, San Diego shines as the sole diamond of an otherwise unassuming area. I arrived to my Omakase Course reservation 20 minutes early and was promptly seated. The appetizer and the following dishes were stunningly plated, and tasted as if Poseidon had risen from the sea simply to expand my experience in gastronomy through the masterful knife skills and precise cuts of my chef. The same can be said for the following dishes. The nigiri course felt like a deep dive into the olfactory senses and how well they could perceive authenticity and freshness. Each piece was put together in front of me like a work of art and the origins of each color and brush stroke explained in detail. I came to celebrate my birthday, and they were kind enough to gift me an amazing complementary dessert in addition to the dessert on the course menu. The service was phenomenal, as expected from a Michelin Star restaurant. My waitress and chef regularly checked up on me and even helped explain the Omakase experience. Inside you are greeted with clean wooden furnishings and a smooth atmosphere. The restaurant is small, giving space only to what is necessary. However that intimate setting only helped to enhance the experience. I highly recommend this restaurant to all, however if you dislike fresh fish, steer clear of this gem. 5/5

We were super excited to have a late Valentine's dinner at Tadokoro. We did a bar reservation for Omakase. Our chef was skilled, though usually too quiet. The restaurant is not loud but it was difficult to hear the descriptions of what was being served. The menu was extremely similar to another Michelin star restaurant in town, down to the prawn head that was still trying to escape our plate. Food was good, but I felt overpriced. My main reason for only 3 stars was our chef had black gunk under his fingernails. Like after I get done working on my car. I totally get it, but when you are serving customers directly in front, and they are watching knife skills and preparation, this should not be something I'm seeing. Especially for this price tag. I was honestly pretty disappointed in that. That being said the app oyster and tofu was really really good. As was the barracuda. And the mango ice cream was incredible. Being to 2 nice places in town that both had a similar menu, I'd have a hard time coming back to this one. It was good but has some faults.

This is quite the institution of Japanese dining culture. First the location is not what you may expect. It is in a tiny strip mall. The marque at the corner of the lot marks the place but the restaurant itself hardly has a sign. There are only about five spots you can park. Some street parking is a bit farther. Come early. Once inside the service and ambiance is phenomenal. They even make sure you are parked in the right stop at check in. You must have a reservation to dine here. We had the Omakase in front of chef Tadokoro. It is an experience and an education. We shred a small flask of house saké which is served warm at $9. For the premium sakés, they are served cold with a glass ice ball in the flask to chill it. Also is that you can choose the hand blown glass cup you like. Here are my pictures of the entire Omakase.

The restaurant seems like a hidden gem. When reaching the destination, you're wondering if you're not lost. Yet, here is it, behind a small door, that an entire new universe is opening to you. The welcoming is not the warmest and tends to be too direct, if not harsh. If you are being seated at the counter, you unfortunately won't have the choice of your dishes and you must have the menu as decided. The sake list is impressive, however the explanations, even if extremely detailed and rich, are lacking the basic info: dry, semi-dry, sweet. But the servers will make a joy out of themselves to explain to you each and every one of the sakes. They will also be very happy to offer you the choice of your sake container and your sake glass, all of them being unique and totally different from one another. They are all very artistic, some of them almost looking like a North African Moorish tea glass. You then get the surprise of getting assigned your own chef. The menu then flows and flies, with cooking made on spot for you in front of your eyes: a sheer pleasure for any foodie. The simplicity of some of the dishes magnifies the beauty of the products: just a slice of raw fish, nothing else. You then would start to wonder by does the Michelin rates this chef; shouldn't it rate and reward the fisherman instead? Until comes the next dish where the chef can show his talent, the pinacle being a shrimp head fried in a way that you almost eat it all, along with the shell and the antennas! Overall, the experience is enchanting and you understand why it got this 1 star rating, which is well deserved. However, as soon as you are done with your dessert, no warm drinks are even offered and you're almost immediately given the bill, as if you were asked to leave asap. Just be aware of the harsh in & out greetings, and you'll have a good time.

The sushi here is outstanding! Best in the county from my experience. You can get a seat if there when they open for lunch without a reservation. Parking is free and ample. The restaurant is in a small strip mall but authentic inside. Do try it if you're a sushi aficionado; you wont be disappointed. That said, it is pricey so be prepared! Dinner is best with a reservations but worth the wait!

Was taken here for my birthday and wow!!! I got the omakase

5/5 by 👻 @Summer B. on 01/01/2024

Was taken here for my birthday and wow!!! I got the omakase , which was nice because they were able to accommodate my salmon allergy and not serve me any. Every course was presented beautifully. The flavors and textures made the meal interesting and adventurous for me. My boyfriend got the sashimi omakase and had so much fun with the presentation and selection of fish. They actually fry the fish head/skeleton garnish at the end so you can eat it! I also liked their alcohol selection. The server recommended a sparkling sake that was second fermented in the bottle (like champagne) which gave it fine bubbles and a unique flavor. This paired well with everything served. This place has definitely earned its reputation

Great Sushi and very good service

4/5 by 👻 @sobore on 05/19/2023

Parking can be a bit of an issue so plan ahead, there is parking close on the street. You should make a reservation, the place is small and has limited seating. The food is very good, comparing it to other sushi restaurants it seems to taste as good or a bit better than most. I would come back when in the area.

This is a good but not great sushi restaurant. The sushi and tempura were good. Service was good. Wine list was very limited. Setting was fine but not special. It’s just not remarkable relative to other sushi restaurants. We expected more for a Michelin starred restaurant.

Phenomenal!!! I came here with my boyfriend and a few friends and we had the omakase and it was unbelievably delicious and such a treat as a pescatarian! The parking is a little limited but it's pretty doable and the location is a little hidden but inside it's simple and charming. The wait staff were very sweet and explained everything to us that we were having and were just super kind! We were seated at a table so we didn't get the pleasure to see the chefs creating the sushi but it was so fun to hear the whole small place bustling with people enjoying themselves. For $160 for several courses of absolutely divine sushi, I highly recommend it! My personal highlights were the premium tofu, the scallops, and the sea bass. This is definitely a perfect little gem in San Diego!!

I came here for lunch and had the omakase.

4/5 by 👻 @Rachel H. on 03/15/2023

It is A LOT of food! I was quite stuffed when I left! I am allergic to crustaceans, and the servers were very conscientious of that. There was a shrimp course that my better half had, and I wish the servers had brought me something in lieu of the shrimp. Instead, I was just sitting there while he was enjoying his food. The seafood was extremely fresh, and my favorite was the nigiri. There was a bone in my barracuda, but that was the only misstep with the fish. I also really enjoyed the soup near the end. Service was very on point. The parking sitch was kind of difficult. I think there are only two spaces reserved for this restaurant.

I've been here twice now, first during lunch on a weekday

5/5 by 👻 @Julia Y. on 03/15/2023

I've been here twice now, first during lunch on a weekday with friends and second for their omakase dinner for a birthday. The first time, we were at the counter and had the honor of being served by Tadokoro San himself! He was super kind, as was the other person preparing the fish and made great conversation in both English (for my friends) and in Japanese (with me). We all got a few nigiris (amazing, the fish is so fresh and flavored and prepared with great thoughtfulness), the seafood miso soup was so luxurious, their tempura - chefs kiss, grilled fish was heavenly, and even their dessert! Holy shoot, their matcha and sesame ice cream was nothing like I've had before! How do they do it all so well? The second time, we had to delay or reservation multiple times because of a delayed flight and the hostess was so accommodating and understanding. Again, everyone was so kind and our server was conversational and made sure that the birthday celebration felt special. Again, everything was delicious and again, the dessert was amazing (they're a sushi restaurant, why are they so good at dessert too?? I'm amazed). Even though we ended up being the last to leave, due to our delayed flight, nobody made us feel rushed and the sushi chefs then took the time to talk to us once the bar seating was cleared. This is my new favorite place in San Diego (besides the taco stand). It's a gem in old town SD, and I recommend anyone to try this place if they're ever here.

Wow, absolutely amazing experience at Sushi Tadokoro! This restaurant is at the most random spot ever in Old Town but the inside is small and quaint- and you feel like you are completely being taken care of. We of course had to order the omakase. Every single dish was phenomenal. You can tell the chef has spent the upmost time and preparation with each serving. I can see why they have received a Michelin star 2 years in a row!

A year later and we are back! Very surprised that we got a reservation with one day notice. It's super hard now to get reservations which is a bummer and discourages us from going more often. Our only option this time was a table omakase, and it was our first time trying it here. They definitely give you more courses than are listed in the menu, which was a relief considering the price. It was nice to give the chef control of our meal and we tried some new things that I otherwise wouldn't have ordered! We did add on some toro sashimi at the end which they were more than happy to do for us (we just paid extra). Overall I still prefer the "choose your own adventure" ordering a la carte better than omakase. I know what I like! I also left feeling a little hungry which is never a good thing especially after what you pay. Service was great as usual!

Came here for our anniversary dinner a few months back.

5/5 by 👻 @Michelle S. on 02/27/2023

It was a beautiful meal. Still thinking about this place. Some things to note: this isn't a fancy place. It's simple, but the food is so beautifully balanced, and there's real complexity in that. We ordered the omakase and didn't hesitate to try everything that was served to us. My only complaint was the dessert, it was a bit lacking. I would have actually enjoyed the meal more without it. Decided not to take a star off as the dessert was such a small portion of the overall experience. We'll definitely be back to order some of our favorites off the menu, and perhaps be back for the omakase again for a special occasion.

It's been while since I came to tadokoro and didn't disappoint! The old chef still look the same last time I saw him 8 years ago- probably all the good fish and food he's been eating lolTadokoro changed their menu and not it's a set omakase of 160 dollars per person plus drinks. Foods came out fast and waitresses were nice. The food was sooo soo good but I was still hungry afterward. Love love how the chef put a lot of details to make the each fish so flavorful and yummy

5/5 by 👻 @Terrence S. on 02/20/2023

Came here for an omakaze dinner by the bar, and wow the experience was phenomenal! I'll be honest this is one of my first times trying omakaze in San Diego, but it truly it did not disappoint. Shoutout to Masato for being our great chef and good company, as well as the owner Takeaki. It is not as hard to reserve as Soichi, but it is still reservation only, so you can't sneak in even as a party of one, I saw someone try. The place is small but homey and comfortable. The chefs are all Japanese, and so are most of the servers; they are all very easy going and have interesting back stories and travel history that relates to the food. They'll be more than happy to tell you about anything you're interested in if you ask. Every single dish, every ingredient was very fresh, from the Hokkaido squid and Hokkaido scallops, to the more funky stuff like seared fatty barracuda and creamy ponzu milt/shirako (fish testicles lol). Most of the ingredients comes from around the world, in batches they receive on Wednesdays and Fridays. Of course there is fatty tuna as well, which they've acquired from Spain. My favorites were the seared barracuda, triggerfish, roe with rice, and the uni. There's often not much seasoning that goes into the preparation but you can taste that it is there, however subtle it may be. I normally hate uni because I think it's too salty/briny, but here it's just mildly sweet and creamy to me. There's bound to be at least one dish you've never tried before, even if you think you've tried it all. I'm not exactly sure what constitutes as a dish since each piece is made individually and handed over personally, but after everything you'll feel full but not stuffed for $160 per person. Soup comes second to last, and dessert comes last. I'll definitely be back for many future special occasions to come!

very disappointed

3/5 by 👻 @Tony C on 12/06/2022

I used to think Tadokoro was outstanding. I don't think so any more. I'm sure their sushi and sashimi are very good, but: First, they've discontinued my favorite dish, chirashi-sushi. No explanation. Second, the assorted tempura (two shrimp and several vegetables) was only average. The shrimp were good, but the vegetables were mushy. Third, even the little bowl of white rice ($4) that I ordered to accompany my tempura was mediocre. Fourth, my friend ordered his favorite, mushroom salad, and found that the variety of mushrooms is less than before, though the dressing is still delicious. In their favor, the service was good and the ambience is pleasing. Parking wasn't a problem for us, but I can see that it might be a problem when they're busy. I won't be going back to Tadokoro, sadly. Some of the Japanese restaurants in the Convoy area of San Diego are more to my taste now. (I should add that I lived in Japan for about 15 years and have eaten at some of the best restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto.)
