CANON: You are not living up to your potential!!
I have been going to Canon since I moved here in 2019. It’s a staple, and always top of the list for out-of-towners. My experience on Saturday 8/12 was so disappointing I can only think that they might be resting on some pretty big laurels because the service was so awful, on every level, that it felt like they just stopped trying to provide decent service. Bartender Vince couldn’t offer a nice greeting or smile to save his life and gave us attitude for asking for Tito’s Vodka. We get it. It’s not high-end but we like it. We were seated at a table for 6 (we were 3) we didn’t complain but there were other 4 top tables. Server was nice but…perfunctory. Ordered appetizers and literally, mid-bite with fork in hand a back-up server said “We need to give you fresh plates”, gathered up the plates, with appetizers still in the middle of the table, me with fork in hand and no way to finish the remaining appetizers with no plates. So we got NEW plates and had to use them to finish our appetizers then the entrée arrived that we had to use our dirty plates for the shared entrée. No acknowledgment by back-up server #3. Disappointing service ALL the way around then when handed the bill there was an automatic 20% gratuity added. If the service was better I might have considered just leaving it alone but it was not so walked over to the server and she acknowledged that it was a computer mistake and would give us a new bill. So in conclusion, I did speak to Manager Jack who was nice enough but not sure that I really got through to him. So future Canon diners beware. If you want friendly, attentive service and decent food portions go to Paragary’s. The team members at Canon I believe have been there quite some time and likely know how to offer good service, seems they have just lost their mojo. Please guys, pay attention, win us back. We are not that difficult honestly, we just want friendly, attentive service. That's it. PS: Love the quote from Will Guidara's book “Unreasonable Hospitality – “Service is black and white, Hospitality is color” FINAL NOTE: food is GREAT but honestly potions are SO tiny we ended up getting pizza after our dinner.
Long on pretty, short on content
Not bad but really, not good at all. The positives are the outdoor seating area, which is nice on a cool evening, and... that's it. The negatives are far too many to ignore: the food is incoherent and over-styled but lacking in substance (too much salt, heavy handed on exotic themes, combinations of flavors that speak of a chef with little training and even less of a palate), poorly executed dishes that wouldn't be worth half the hype or price. The servers have been trained in an invasive, "have WE decided / what do WE want / how is everything tasting / I'm checking in [every 5 minutes]" style that speaks of amateurism at best and sycophantic hillbillyism at worst (not their fault per se, but definitely something a management team should be aware of). Not sure if this city that throws out the vacuous Farm-to-Form (tm) has anything better to offer, but clearly this is not something that you should spend hundreds on. TL/dr: never again
Really great find for us in Sacramento as we're still
Really great find for us in Sacramento as we're still finding what places we like. Canon has a great, lovely ambience, casual and modern atmosphere with a touch of fancy. Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly as were the other staff that came by to bring out our dishes. The food was delicious, we especially liked the beet dish and our miso pudding for dessert. The main course we decided on was the pork crepe thing, which was good, but it felt like a mediocre deconstructed Vietnamese banh xeo had a baby with a Chinese chun bing. We should've known better. Nonetheless we will definitely be coming back to enjoy something else on their seasonal menu along with their delicious cocktails.
Great food but sort of a hodgepodge of different cuisines.
International dishes. All beautifully executed. Family style and dishes don't come out at the same time. So many delicious dishes such as: crispy lamb pavé, tater tots, chicken drumsticks, heirloom beets, bruss sprouts. I liked the idea of the oysters with the droppers of difference accoutrements but I would have loved to get the standard ones they typically come with. I always get whiskey sour when I eat at Canon and they make a perfect one!
Great place for date nights or groups.
Fun family style meals, food was really good, a little for everyone (vegans, pescatarians, carnivores), and really good drinks as well. The Hamachi was really good, veggies all very good as well. Service was good, lots of bus people but the main waiting staff could have checked in more. Took a while to flag the waitress down to order another drink as several of us had empty glasses for a while (ok maybe 5-10 mins, not terrible for a busy Saturday night, but could be better for the price tag). Would come again
It was very good.
Menu is different but good shareable dishes are great it was an enjoyable dinner
What a wonderful high end and chill place in East
What a wonderful high end and chill place in East Sacramento that I would definitely recommend for anyone who is looking for a date night/ celebrate special occasion without burning a big hole in your pocket. To begin with, they accept reservations, they have beautiful seating for all group sizes and a very urban modern bar seating as well if you want to grab a quick drink post work.We celebrated our 2 year anniversary at the place and we're very happy with the overall service and food at this place. We were running late and the host was kind to accommodate that to start with. Our seating was beautiful and the overall ambiance was very urban and just a modern vibe with dim lights and candles. They have both inside and outside seating with a covered patio. They also have heaters which is great. Our server was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu. We tried their tater tots, and the chai cocktail which both came out quick and extra points to split our cocktail into separate drink ware as we were sharing. This is just so thoughtful. For the entree we tried their chicken and beets salad ( which for too overpowering for my taste) but they they were accommodating to change the dish and my new entree came out quickly and totally killed it. The best part, the server was very kind to be able to find sometime for me ( a vegetarian) that suits my taste buds and that is exactly the service you would expect from a place like this. Full points on that. They also have a separate dessert menu and their menu actually changes every few days as well.Overall I was just so happy to choose this place for our anniversary dinner and would definitely recommend. Tip to business: it would be very thoughtful if you could offer a small something for special occasions at the end of the meal.Overall I totally get why this is a 4 time Michelin Bib Gourmand awarded restaurant.
Another one of our favorite date night spots in the area!
Another one of our favorite date night spots in the area! Was a bit nervous about the outdoor seating in the winter, but they did a really good job with heating. I even ended up taking off my jacket. Not to mention the lighting in their heated patio is very romantic. The drink selection is also very impressive - not only is there a lot of variety, but each cocktail has a unique spin/touch to it. We loved the Cenote (big Mezcal fan), Chai again (such unique combination of flavors that go so well together), and the the Brooklying. As for food, we did a combination of small and large plates. Looks like they've updated some of the menu items but from memory we got a veggie tika masala small plate dish, chicken drumsticks (super recommend), and an ahi tuna large platter (no longer on menu but recommend if it comes back again). Canon does a great job of combining different flavors to create something unique (better than the original imo), and its service is exceptional. Definitely will come back again!
Huge fan of this restaurant the first few times dining here.
Took my daughter and her husband last weekend for her 31st birthday. The food was tasty, but for some reason this time the portions seemed smaller and the price higher. I understand that everything is higher these days, but the portion size does not seem to be in line with the price. Our server was new-nice-but it was apparent. 3.5 stars.
Thought I'd reviewed this lovely place but Yelp is nudging.
Hubs and I had a marvelous dinner out on the patio in late October. Everything was delicious. What stuck with us was a toasted beet dish with green curry and more. It was sublime. So much so that if I lived nearby I would have done takeout for it the next week. Can't wait for our next visit.
We had a blast celebrating a birthday here.
Though it was during a stormy night, we sat on the patio without much trouble. It's a REALLY covered patio, and frankly it felt like an extension of the indoor area. Barely noticed we were outside with the heat and roof. Our server (Johnny) was amazing! Super attentive and informative. We ordered the tots, chicken lollipops, carrot dish, tikka masala potatoes, char siu white bass and pork belly. For dessert we got the malasadas, miso pudding, and pear sherbert. Cocktails - Brooklying and the Chai Again.Without diving into detail, I'd recommend everything! The most notable dishes for us were the white bass and the miso pudding. Incredible - couldn't have enough of it. The Brooklying is an aromatic take on the class old fashioned that I really appreciated. The Chai Again is a dangerous drink. They don't do anything spectacular for birthdays, just a heads up. But they did put a candle in the pudding and gave us the malasadas!
Nice ambiance, food was mediocre.
Over priced for what it is. Biscuits were similar to frozen biscuits from Costco (sorry). I believe that the dishes I ordered were lacking in something, probably salt. I won't go back to be honest.
